Overview
Super Mutants are one of the main hostile enemy types in Fallout 76. They are large, aggressive humanoid mutants created through exposure to the Forced Evolutionary Virus, also known as FEV. Most Super Mutants attack players on sight and can be dangerous because they often appear in groups.
They commonly use rifles, heavy weapons, melee weapons, and explosives. Some variants are stronger than others, including Super Mutant Masters, Firestarters, Suiciders, and Behemoths. Suiciders are especially dangerous because they charge at players while carrying mini nukes.
Super Mutants are also useful for XP farming, loot farming, and daily or weekly challenges because they appear in several reliable locations across Appalachia. When fighting them, it is usually best to keep some distance, use cover, and take out the most dangerous enemies first.
Where to Find Super Mutants
Super Mutants can be found in many areas of Appalachia. Common locations include West Tek Research Center, Huntersville, Grafton, Grafton Steel, New Gad, National Isolated Radio Array, Eastern Regional Penitentiary, The General's Steakhouse, Abandoned Bog Town, The Thorn, and Harper's Ferry area.
West Tek Research Center and Huntersville are two of the most well-known Super Mutant locations. West Tek is popular for XP farming because it has many Super Mutants in one area. Huntersville is important because of its connection to the Super Mutant backstory in Appalachia.
Backstory
In Appalachia, Super Mutants are closely connected to FEV experiments. Humans exposed to the virus were transformed into larger, stronger mutants, often losing much of who they were before. Huntersville is one of the major locations tied to these experiments and the spread of Super Mutants in the region.
Most Super Mutants are hostile toward humans and rely on brute strength, scavenged weapons, and numbers to overwhelm enemies. They often speak in simple, aggressive phrases and treat outsiders as threats.
