Infestations

What We Know So Far

Infestations are a new endgame-focused encounter type coming to Fallout 76. Instead of working like a normal public event, they appear to function more like dangerous takeover zones that can appear around Appalachia.

When an Infestation is active, a familiar outdoor location becomes occupied by a hostile faction. The normal enemies in that area are replaced with stronger Infested enemies, and players must fight through them to reach and defeat the faction boss.

How Infestations Work

Infestations can appear at certain outdoor locations across Appalachia. When one is found, the map gives players a general area to investigate. Once the encounter is underway, the boss location becomes easier to identify.

The enemies inside an Infestation are much stronger than the standard versions you would normally find in those areas. They are grouped into smaller support enemies, tougher combat enemies, and a main boss.

The boss is the key target. It has a large health pool and serves as the main reward source for the encounter.

Even if the enemies do not display legendary stars, they can still drop legendary loot. It is worth checking bodies throughout the fight instead of only looting the boss.

Known Enemy Groups and Bosses

Infestations can be tied to different enemy factions. The known boss types include:

Walkthrough

  1. 1Find an active Infestation by checking known outdoor spawn points around Appalachia. These encounters appear dynamically, so the exact active location can change.
  2. 2Enter the area and start clearing enemies. Take the smaller enemies seriously — even the basic Infestation enemies are tougher than normal.
  3. 3After enough progress is made, move toward the boss area and prepare for a harder fight.
  4. 4Defeat the boss to finish the encounter.
  5. 5Before leaving, loot the boss and any other enemies you defeated. Useful drops can come from more than just the final target.

Tips

  • Go in prepared with a strong build, enough ammo, and healing supplies.
  • Loot every enemy you can — legendary rewards are not limited to enemies with visible legendary stars.
  • Once the boss appears, make it your main target, but stay aware of the surrounding enemies. Infestation mobs are much more dangerous than standard enemies.
